Any project undertaken will comprise of various and many items, either specifically made for that project or manufacturer’s off-the-shelf parts (such as regular hardware).
It is customary to produce a full or part specification and a full list of parts, materials and their sources – particularly if quality assurance is to be respected. The familiar shortening of the phrase is “BOM” and is recognised as part of any project, without which it is impossible to tell what component production costs are likely to be and what profit, if any, is likely to be made. It is a great way to focus the mind and to take the most economic route prior to production rather than waiting until it is too late.
We usually list and categorise the parts on spreadsheets, printed on A3 (unless it is a “tiny” product!).
